¡No se deje engañar! Esto no es un nuevo y futurista vehículo marciano —aunque Marte bien podría confundirse con el árido terreno del desierto chileno de Atacama. Este es un vehículo transportador de ALMA conocido con el nombre de Otto, y mide 20 metros de largo, 10 metros de ancho y tiene 28 ruedas. ¡En la foto parece que lo baña la belleza de la luz de la Vía Láctea!
Esta máquina gigantesca fue construida en Alemania. Fue especialmente diseñada para el transporte de las antenas de ALMA desde el centro de operaciones, ubicado a 2.900 metros sobre el nivel del mar, hasta el llano de Chajnantor, un lugar situado a unos 5.000 metros sobre el nivel del mar, y para mover las antenas entre las diferentes posiciones disponibles.
Otto, con sus 130 toneladas bien equilibradas, se mueve y alcanza una velocidad máxima de 12 kilómetros por hora mientras lleva una antena —¡sin duda no está rompiendo ningún récord de velocidad! Por suerte, la velocidad no es la prioridad durante este delicado proceso. La seguridad y la precisión son fundamentales. A pesar de su tamaño y su potencia, esta bestia amarillo brillante puede colocar una antena con una precisión de unos pocos milímetros, asegurando que cada antena se coloca en su base perfectamente. La capacidad de recolocar sus 66 antenas es parte de lo que hace que ALMA sea tan potente.
