The Moon bears and Sun bears are not widely known but often times face a horrendous fate.
Moon bears are illegally hunted and captured for bile farms. The bears will spend the rest of their life living in small cages, getting fed just enough rotten food to get by, while repeatedly being stabbed in their gall bladder with a dirty needle for their bile. The bile is used for (illegal) medical practices that is thought to have healing powers.
The Sun bear faces an equally terrible fate. Bear paw soup is a black market item where the bear is, often times, taken to the table alive and heavily drugged. It's paw is then chopped off and placed into the soup because it is believed to give superhuman strength. The bear is often killed for this one time meal.
Free the Bears, in Luang Prabang, Laos is a not-for-profit charity that rescues these bears and brings them to their center for rehabilitation and a happy life. They rely completely on charity and donations and have a great space for these bears to live out their days with new friends and lots of play space.
Seeing these bears happy, playful, and as free as possible really tugged on my heart strings. If you want to help these bears live a beary happy life, as well as help the center continue their efforts for bear rescue, check out their website below. You can donate via PayPal or give a virtual gift, like a hammock!
