.
After the last breakfast of our 9 days/8 nights High Sierra Trail backpacking trip, we went down to Lone Pine Creek, which was about 20 feet below our campsite, for the last time to fill up our water bottles for the rest of the hike down to Whitney Portal. The water of the creek, flowing quite nicely, was quite cold and refreshing. It was slightly emotional and sentimental to think that the trip that I had wanted to do for the last two years was already coming to an end. Of course, this wasn’t as epic as the other way longer thru-hikes, such as the Pacific Crest Trail or the Appalachian Trail. But, it’s all about the experience, and every experience is different. And most of all, I made so many great memories. A creek never stops flowing. It is always important to to remember that our journey shouldn’t either. Because every moment matters.

Our original plan was to spend the last night of the High Sierra Trail (HST) backpacking trip at Trail Camp at the bottom of the ninety-nine switchbacks. But, it was still quite early when we arrived there. So, we decided to hike farther down to shorten the distance to Whitney Port when exiting next day (because we still had to hitch a ride to Lone Pine Campground). It would’ve been cool to camp at Consultation Lake but in the end we settled farther down at the top of this giant granite slab, higher than both Mirror Lake and Outpost Camp. The view of Inyo Mountains across Owens Valley in the far distance through the narrow valley was quite a treat. And we were still high enough to see Lone Pine Lake as well. The nicely flowing Lone Pine Creek about 20 feet below us made this campsite an ideal spot to spend the night. Next morning we got up early and found a perfect spot a bit down the slab to catch the sunrise. The sun was not visible because of the ridgeline on the right, but on our left the east end of the jagged Pinnacle Ridgeline was radiating in insane orange once the sun rose! After a few minutes, it was gone. And it was time for us to get ready to descend the last section of Mt. Whitney Trail.

On our way down from Mt. Whitney summit, till we reached back Trail Crest, I couldn’t help myself making frequent stops and gazing at what was laid out before my eyes. Yes, I had been here before. It wasn’t the first time. But, how would I know whether or not there would be another time? I was just getting most out of that moment, which would never return. Right in front of me, Mt. Hitchcock towered over the beautiful Hitchcock Lakes. And there was the equally amazing Guitar Lake to the right. We spent the last two nights at both lakes! If you look farther out, beyond the Kern River Canyon, Mt. Kaweah, Second Kaweah, Red Kaweah and Black Kaweah made up their own mountain skyscraper! We started our 73-mile excursion from Crescent Meadow way behind it. In fact, the Great Western Divide, which we had crawled over via Kaweah Gap several days ago, continued to stretch far to the left of the frame. It marks the Sequoia National Park boundary. It is truly mind boggling to look back at the mountain range where we backpacked for the last 8 days in a different perspective.

The alarm went off at midnight. Although we barely slept a wink, it was time to crawl out of our warm and cozy sleeping bags. No one was in the mood for a small chat while packing, thanks to lack of sleep and chilly air. In half an hour we were ready for one of the most anticipated moments on this 9-day backcountry excursion - ascending Mt. Whitney in the dark to catch the sunrise at the summit. The full moon lit the trail, and we hardly depended on the headlamps. Before reaching Trail Crest, we saw a string of headlamp lights slowly snaking up the trail all the way from Guitar Lake. We left our heavy packs at the crest, as most JMT’ers do, and continued our ascend carrying sleeping bag, seat pad and snacks for breakfast only. When reaching the summit at 4:15 am, we were the first ascending that morning, according to the register. While the sunrise was still about 1 ½ hours away, the harrowing wind was almost unbearable. So, we hurtled into the summit hut without hesitation. Inside we were greeted by three backpackers who had spent the night. We were told that they had finished the thru hike the day before but decided to spend the night there to catch the sunrise. Out the window we saw a glimpse of the sunglow start seeping through the thick layer of clouds hanging just above Inyo Mountains. We promptly marched out of the hut and found a spot near the edge of the summit cliff. While bundled up in our sleeping bags, we patiently waited. And as promised, Lone Pine in Owens Valley was slowly waking up again as the sun rose over the clouds never seemingly dissipating.
