View timiprewolo's Instagram Meet Dr Jennifer Warren! You can't possibly listen to Jen's story and remain the same. The organizers of this year's conference could not have chosen a better title! "Inspiring Journeys". Jen's story is one of resilience and turning setbacks into amazing comebacks! Turning disability into ability💪💪💯 36 year old Jen joined the Army for adventure and a touch of teenage rebellion – her father served in the RAF. Having worked as a Regimental Medical Officer in Germany, and completing a tour of Afghanistan, she returned home to start professional anaesthetic training when a skiing accident in 2008 resulted in her losing the use of her left leg.
Since then, Jen has turned her focus to paratriathlon which she has found hugely beneficial for both her physical and psychological recovery: “Disability might define what you can’t do but the only limit on what you can do is your imagination.” Jen has taken part in numerous sporting events; most notably winning 9 medals at the 2016 Invictus Games, becoming the first person to take part in the Lewa Marathon in a wheelchair and captaining the first female disabled team to complete the Arch to Arc, all while rebuilding her career as an anaesthetist and becoming a mother.

View timiprewolo's Instagram Meet Professor Carron Shankland! When I first read her profile, I couldn't help but wonder why I was being paired as a Co-Panelist with such a remarkably accomplishment academic! A Professor in Computing Science! But meeting her in person and listening to her story made me realize, that at the end of the day, no matter where we come from or how different our stories may be, sometimes we all want the same things and some experiences are universal! E.g. Dreams, aspirations, ambitions, success, love, family, career, success, loss, grief etc.
Carron is a professor in Computing Science at the University of Stirling. In 2016 she was one of twelve women in Computing and Mathematics to receive a Suffrage Science Award, recognising both scientific achievement and ability to inspire others.

Carron is passionate about the promotion of careers in science for women, having initiated and led the Athena SWAN programme of actions at Stirling for four years. She chairs the BCS Women in Computing Research Group and is building a good practice network of computing departments engaged in gender equality work.

Carron has been an academic for twenty-seven years; at Stirling for twenty of those years. Her research is about understanding the behaviour of biological systems through mathematical and computational models. She co-leads the POEMS network linking modelling to healthcare technology. A current project is in modelling cancer therapies to try to understand how the actions of therapies might combine to greater effect. As a senior academic, she believes in participating in governance: she's had positions on Academic Council and University Court, and was deputy head of Natural Sciences.

When she's not doing computing science (or admin!) she likes to play classical chamber music (she plays clarinet and viola), chop things down in the garden, or visit galleries and coffee shops with her partner Pat. #internationalwomensday #iwd2017 #aberdeen #scotland #unitedkingdom #CarronShankland @CarronShankland 1564909083521670653_501581965

View timiprewolo's Instagram Meet Hannah Miley! The first thing that struck me about this incredibly strong woman was her humility! You could never guess how strong she really is from her appearance but this woman right here is one of Scotland’s most successful female swimmers! Hannah has an international swimming career spanning a decade thus far. Three Olympic Games, including a 4th place finish in the 400m Individual Medley in Rio, along with multiple medal winning performances at the World Championships, European Championships and Commonwealth Games.
Hannah, raised in Inverurie, north of Aberdeen is renowned for her work ethic and commitment to achieving her goals. Her development and consistency has been partly attributed to the support network around her, namely her father and coach, Patrick, who is now a full-time coach having previously worked as a helicopter pilot. They are a very unique and formidable team, often highlighting the importance of continued communication to improve.
Perhaps Hannah’s greatest achievement was in defending her 2010 Commonwealth title in front of a partisan crowd in Glasgow in 2014, with a resounding victory in the 400m Individual Medley. Softly spoken Hannah has built a rapport with media outlets and the wider audience thanks to her candid interviews and love for her sport.

A wonderful ambassador to her sport, Hannah has set her sights on an unprecedented third consecutive Commonwealth Games title in Australia in 2018.
It was indeed an honour to have shared the stage with you as a Co Speaker/Panelist at the #internationalwomensday #iwd2017 Conference and to say I was inspired by you is to say the least👍 #strengthofawoman 💪#hannahmiley #aberdeen #scotland #unitedkingdom 1564901023822580070_501581965
