View globalstoryteller's Instagram While I was looking the items at the shop this girl came and order something I didn't understand. The shopkeeper gave her different kind of candies and then he turned around and grabbed a pencil. A pencil! Call me mzungu if you want, but that girl buying a pencil and candies shocked me. I am sure she didn't have much money, but she decided to buy a pencil instead of buying more candies. The only thing I could say was: give me a juice and don't charge the girl for the pencil, I pay for it (of course I would never pay for the candies). I don't like to go around creating the idea that tourists are rich and can go here and there paying for everything, because that is a very dangerous example we can give to kids and it also create wrong stereotypes and promotes begging or dependence on external aid. But I hoped that the girl understood that if she invests in culture or education, she will be rewarded somehow. Then we went out and I took the photo while she had her lollipop (Source: @theroadprovides). #GlobalStoryteller #GlobalStory #kenya #africa#people_infinity_ #humanity_shots_ #humanitarian 1520704307384929205_4298180330

View leos_and_lions's Instagram RepostBy @disruptafrica: "Meet the Shonda Rhimes of #Ghana
Director Nicole Amarteifio is building a digital video empire in #Accra with the goal of redefining how the world sees African women.

The nickname referencing the powerhouse creator and showrunner behind hits like Grey's Anatomy, Scandal, and How to Get Away With Murder—Amarteifio, 35, is a symbol for the future of African entertainment. Best known for @anafricancitytv, the 2014 web series that set the girlfriends-navigate-love-and-career premise of Sex and the City in Accra. Nicole is countering the stereotype that often portrays African women as a poor, tragic monolith. "I'm really trying to change that narrative," Amarteifio says. "To show a representation of black women that you rarely see." The show has been labelled as “the African Sex and City,” but #AnAfricanCity goes way beyond that. The popular #webseries offers a witty and often poignant narrative of five ambitious women who have returned to Accra as “repats.”, as per Amarteifio’ self description. Nicole was born in Ghana but moved to London and then relocated to NY as a teen. Graduated from Georgetown university—she worked briefly at the World Bank. Her desire to hear Africans discuss their own issues drives the script. Fashion is also an ever-present influence, with the wardrobe specifically sourced from African designers.
“It’s the story I know. And the story of many of my peers,” Amarteifio says. “I thought it was worth telling. I thought it was worth seeing on screen.”
Despite this familiarity, she initially struggled to pique the interest of the few people she knew in the film and TV industry. So, she poured her savings into creating her own show.
At first, Amarteifio assumed her audience would be her peers, but then the hits started coming in from all over the world. Season 1 was so successful that raising funds for season 2 was far easier, and she’s already in talks with TV networks for season 3. In the meantime, she's started working on her 1st film and a political drama series set in West #Africa.
