View feminist_bookshelf's Instagram “Men Explain Things to Me” by Rebecca Solnit. In a collection of seven essays, Rebecca "took on what often goes wrong in conversations between men and women. She wrote about men who wrongly assume they know things and wrongly assume women don’t, about why this arises, and how this aspect of the gender wars works, airing some of her own hilariously awful encounters.

She ends on a serious note— because the ultimate problem is the silencing of women who have something to say, including those saying things like, “He’s trying to kill me!” Goodreads. ✍🏾️#5womenwriters #womenwriters #womenwriting #bookoftheday #booklover #book #bookrecommendation #bookshelf #feministshelf #feministbookclub #feministreads #writing #essays #menexplainthingstome #rebeccasolnit 1453074762603276065_4344541447

View writingonbookmargins's Instagram Honestly, I haven't actually read this because shortly after starting it I decided that I was going to save myself the waste of time that would've been reading this book of "poetry." "Poetry" can either be two things: Pretentious and unintelligible words strung together in verses, or the product of the misconception that normal prose presented in verses is lyrical. This is the latter. (Mind you, I am a great fan of William Carlos Williams; poetry doesn't have to be fancy in order to be poetic.) Anyhow, this wasn't to my taste. HOWEVER, I do think there is merit in Kaur's work. She has created a widely read piece of literature that is feminist, critical, and inclusive. For that, I'm thankful. For having reached a number of people and stirred in them these values, when, let's face it, most of poetry is written by white men based on highly patriarchal values, such as romantic love and the woman as an object. 1452612993355136094_4470378705
